I hope that you will be able to join us in solidarity. I am particularly looking forward to celebrating a number of retiring teachers at the Sept-Iles event.
Have a good union day,
Once again this year, the ESTA Annual General Meeting will be held in three parts due to the large territory we must cover. Teachers who attend the meeting will be reimbursed $35 each to help pay for travel and, for those who choose to attend, the meal afterwards.
Traditionally, the ESTA AGM is more than a report on the union’s activities of the year; it is also an opportunity to gather socially and in solidarity. This year is especially exciting since there are a large number of retiring teachers; please join me as we celebrate their careers in education. School board representatives will also be in attendance to celebrate the many years that our retiring teachers have spent in the service of our school board and its students. I look forward to seeing many of you at our AGM and banquet.
NOTE: Please confirm your attendance and your meal choice with your school/centre’s union delegate. A sign-up sheet will be circulating in each school/centre. You may bring a guest to the supper but please confirm their attendance in order to help the restaurant plan for our event.

At the recent three-part AGM of our Association, three motions were passed to update our constitution:
- Change the definition of “teacher” to reflect the collective agreement.
- Change to: “at least one member of the Executive shall be appointed to the positions of PIC representative and at least one member shall be appointed as EPC representative to ensure the legitimacy and effectiveness of said committees.”
- Add the following to the duties of the Secretary-Treasurer: “- act as a delegate of ESTA at ESTA’s Annual General Meetings.”
On May 6 and 7, QPAT held its Annual General Meeting (a.k.a. Provincial Council) in Point-Claire. Representing ESTA were Nelson Roussy, 1st vice-president, and myself. Gordon Dell, ESTA past president, was also there as a QPAT executive board member.
The meeting began with the “big guns” as Serge Laurendeau, QPAT president, introduced three representatives from our Common Front partners: Mary-Lou Donnelly, President of the Canadian Teacher’s Federation; Manon Bernard, President of the Fédération des syndicats de l’enseignemnet (FSE); and Réjean Parent, president of the Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ).
I was very happy to meet with 111 representatives from the various locals that makeup QPAT. It was a very productive meeting and I feel that these meetings bring us all a little closer. Solidarity!
