On Wednesday, June 19, 2013, Ray Venables presented a petition on behalf of ESTA to the Eastern Shores School Board’s Council of Commissioners. The petition, signed by 83 teachers from 14 schools, called on ESSB to reduce the number of mandatory student tests and to consult its teachers, through the Educational Policies Committee, on the issue when reviewing its Partnership Agreement. As an aside, it’s worth noting that article 231 of the Quebec Education Act has the following to say about testing: “A school board may impose internal examinations in the subjects it determines at the end of each cycle of the elementary level and at the end of the first cycle of the secondary level.” The Education Act does not specifically make mention to internal examinations by a school board at grade levels other than those at the end of each cycle; therefore, there is no obligation under the law by a school board to insist on examinations at every level.
