In the light of recent developments, Education International (EI) has decided to issue a new appeal calling on its member organizations to urge the Bahraini authorities to immediately release on bail Mahdi ‘Issa Mahdi Abu Dheeb, President of the Bahraini Teachers Association (BTA), whose health condition is deteriorating.
In partnership with LabourStart, EI launched a new online campaign that has already generated over 7000 messages since 26 January. We call on you to take action now on the LabouStart website and to give visibility to the campaign by recommending it on your website and your Facebook account:

This year, I had the pleasure of attending the annual Montreal Teachers’ Association/Appalachian Teachers’ Association reps weekend at the Manoir des Sables, Mt. Orford. On November 4, 5, and 6 the MTA and ATA reps, QPAT staff and a number of other local union presidents came together to discuss various topics of interest and to participate in a number of workshops.

Due to budget and time constraints, each year I have had to decline MTA’s invitation. I was, therefore, happy to meet with our big brother/sister union and to compare notes.

The MTA model is one that I think works. It is an excellent opportunity to communicate, cooperate and consult with colleagues. I extend my thanks to the MTA for their invitation and hospitality. I would also like to thank the ESTA executive for allowing me to participate in this activity.

On May 6 and 7, QPAT held its Annual General Meeting (a.k.a. Provincial Council) in Point-Claire. Representing ESTA were Nelson Roussy, 1st vice-president, and myself. Gordon Dell, ESTA past president, was also there as a QPAT executive board member.

The meeting began with the “big guns” as Serge Laurendeau, QPAT president, introduced three representatives from our Common Front partners: Mary-Lou Donnelly, President of the Canadian Teacher’s Federation; Manon Bernard, President of the Fédération des syndicats de l’enseignemnet (FSE); and Réjean Parent, president of the Centrale des syndicats du Québec (CSQ).

I was very happy to meet with 111 representatives from the various locals that makeup QPAT. It was a very productive meeting and I feel that these meetings bring us all a little closer. Solidarity!

Are you up for the challenge?

The ESTA executive met on Tuesday, March 16 to discuss many issues including Provincial Negotiations.  The time is ticking, Mr. Charest and Mme. Courchesne, since our contract will expire on March 31, 2010!  Are you listening?

THE EXTA EXECUTIVE HAVE A CHALLENGE FOR ALL SCHOOLS AND CENTRES: send us a group photo of all your teachers with your QPAT paraphernalia (e.g banners, bracelets, and scarves) in a show of SOLIDARITY!  We want the public to know that we’re working hard on a NEGOTIATED contract.  We want you to know that YOU ARE NOT ALONE despite the distance and isolation.

On March 20, the Common Front will have a massive rally in Montreal.  Since we can’t join them, why not show them that our spirit and support?

As we prepare to put into force the QPAT Action Plan, I will be communicating with you soon (especially concerning the extended recess periods every Wednesday for the month of April).

Have a good union day and SEND US YOUR PHOTOS!  Don’t be shy!
